(Not investigated here, though an important caution: dare we assume a human whose works were evil must now be in Hell?)

This is not just about how to feel when a wicked man dies. Half the unsolicited headlines in my email are personal attacks, and gloating over some bad thing our political adversaries are suffering or will now suffer. "Click bait" is even a term for appeals like this to our love of judging others as so much more evil than ourselves. Satan is called "the accuser" in Revelation 12:10. It is a legal term, meaning Satan gets people dragged before courts of law and the courts of public opinion, and in Job 1 even brought his accusation before God! How we, too, love to accuse and then gloat that we have found someone worthier of judgment than ourselves!

This study was begun by Robert Rudnick

Rudnick: This morning, Friday, April 28, 2023, Leroy Carhart [late term abortionist] died. Absent last minute repentance, 'Leroy, would you like your eternity regular or extra crispy?' He may have been Satanic enough to think he wanted that."

Leach: "Rejoice not when your enemy falls lest...

Rudnick: But God won't raise him up. He's dead. He probably won't get at me for chastisement by showing him mercy. When the wicked fall the people rejoice.

Leach:

Proverbs 29:2 When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.

Proverbs 11:10 When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.

Exodus 15:21 And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.

Revelation 19:1 And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God: 2 For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand. 3 And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever. 4 And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia. 5 And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great.

Proverbs 17:5 Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.

Judges 16:25 And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made them sport: and they set him between the pillars.

Job 31:28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above. 29 If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him: 30 Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

Luke 13:1 There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? 3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Matthew 18:21 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? 22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. 23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. 24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. 25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. 27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. 28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. 29 And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. 30 And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. 31 So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. 32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: 33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? 34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. 35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Contradiction? Is it too hard to decide if it is OK to gloat over wicked people thrown in Hell? Surely it is safe to gloat over Satan himself in the Lake of Fire, Revelation 20:10? Surely God doesn't love even Satan, does He? And Leroy Carhart was right up there with Satan, no?

Hmmm. Job 1, God reasons with Satan. Even answers Satan's prayer to torment Job. Jude 9, the archangel is respectful to Satan; he "durst not bring against him a railing accusation".

We are like children tattling on our siblings, imagining ourselves so far above the reproach they deserve, expecting praise for being so righteous as to have the insight to calculate an inventory of the worthlessness in our brother.

We don't comprehend that our parents love our brother as much as us. Yes, they want our help holding our brother accountable, but that is not for the joy of judging but the grief of concern for the blessings he must forfeit from the natural consequences of disobedience.

1 Corinthians 13:5 [Love] Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; [Greek: does not take inventory of evil]
