This helps explain why the wicked do so well in America:
Proverbs 24:15 Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place: 16 For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief. 17 Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth: 18 Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him. 19 Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked; 20 For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out.
The Meaning of "Personal Attack", aka the Ad Hominem fallacy
Fallacy In Logic.com is doing God's work, (along with several other websites that explain the fallacy similarly), identifying, not from Scripture but from logic, what is stupid about personal attacks, which are also called Mudslinging, Name-calling, Shooting the Messenger, and Damning the source. Official names: Argumentum ad hominem, Abusive fallacy.
There is a spiritual difference between the focus of Fallacy In Logic, which is on the intelligence of the accuser, and that of Proverbs 24:17, which is on the heart of the accuser. Comedian Will Rogers once said "Nowadays its a bigger crime to be dumb than dishonest." Personal attacks are both.
Satan is identified as "the Accuser": Revelation 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
Focusing on the intelligence of Personal Attacks, Fallacy In Logic explains:
Definition: The fallacy of ad hominem abusive occurs when someone verbally attacks the person making an argument, rather than criticizing the validity of their claim. In other words, it’s an attempt to discredit someone’s argument by directing the focus on their supposed failings – that are unrelated to the issue at hand – such as their character, intelligence, physical appearance, or morals.
Examples from FallacyInLogic:
Carly: “I think that climate change is the most important issue of our time and everyone should acknowledge that.”
Jamie: “You didn’t even go to college, so no one should listen to you.”
___
Mike: “There are so many Earth-like planets out there that I think there must be life on some of them.”
Jenny: “What could you possibly know about this, you are an unemployed loser who spends all his time watching Netflix.”
When observations of your opponent's character, intelligence, etc. is NOT a "personal attack" and does NOT violate Proverbs 24:17
FallacyInLogic points out: "An argument against a person is not fallacious when it’s clearly relevant to the discussion. In other words, when the topic of an argument is directly related to a person’s characteristics, credentials, skills, or such. For instance, if someone in a position to enforce the law has acted against the law, then pointing it out may be valid and important to the debate."
FallacyInLogic says it is also not a personal attack when it is combined with criticism that addresses the topic. "When someone counters an opponent’s claim with a relevant and valid argument but makes an irrelevant insult simultaneously, it’s not an ad hominem. (It is an "insult".)"
I disagree. Any gratuitous insult is like using naughty words: it adds no intelligence to the discussion, and does detract from the "message" of your enemy by directing the audience's attention to the sins of its "messenger".
However, a response to error can be Biblically followed by introducing a new equally important truth which is proved by the existence of the error. Jesus responded to the logic of the Pharisees and followed that by observing that it was evidence of the motives of the Pharisees:
Matthew 23:24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. 25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. 26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. 27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. 28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
The whole chapter is Jesus' public denunciation of the Pharisees. These verses follow specific examples of their cruel, soul-destroying hypocrisy. It is Biblically important for the people then to distinguish between the Pharisees' social authority and their spiritual leadership. The situation was very much like spiritual leaders today: seminaries, Bible scholars, college professors and pastors are valuable to any Christian who wants to understand the Word of God, because their scholarship keeps Bibles in print and online with awesome commentaries, cross references, Greek and Hebrew lexicons, etc. But they are human, and share many human sins to levels not always dramatically less than the rest of the population, including divorce, adultery, pornography, love of money and fame. They even like "chief seats" at public events. They are proud of their "doctrines" which distinguish them from other denominations, even though 1 Corinthians 1 explicitly condemns such "divisions".
Similarly, in Jesus' time when no one had a Bible in their home and heard it only read orally by priests at meetings, it was important for people to respect the Word of God read by the Pharisees every Sabbath, but not to humor, much less copy, their disobedience to that same Word of God. In fact, a regular theme of the Bible is to revere the Message from God, but never the human messenger of it.
But we violate Proverbs 24:17 when we gloat over the misfortunes of those who have hurt us. Jesus did not criticize the Pharisees with contempt. He warned of Hell with the tenderness a mother has for a child about to do something dangerous. See Hebrews 12. God blesses the wicked as He does the saints, Matthew 5:43-48. God even answers some of the devil's prayers, Job 1, to the extent He can turn them into good for others, Romans 8:28.
Now here are the kinds of headlines that make me cringe, having read Proverbs 24:17. I would love to "unsubscribe" from their sources, but this disobedience to God is common to so many news sources. They are honored as "click bait", meaning so many conservatives love this violation of Proverbs 24:17 that headline writers are pressured to put them on important information just to get it read.
